Live tuberous begonia “bliss”

Tuberous begonias are beautiful flowering plants that are grown for their bright, showy blooms. Here are some general tips for growing tuberous begonias:

Planting: Tuberous begonias prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Plant the tubers in early spring, about 1 inch deep, with the concave side facing upwards. Make sure to space them about 12 inches apart.

Watering: Tuberous begonias like moist soil but do not like to be waterlogged. Water them deeply once a week, or more often if the soil is dry. Avoid overhead watering, as this can cause the flowers to rot.

Fertilizing: Fertilize tuberous begonias every two weeks with a balanced fertilizer. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label, as too much fertilizer can cause the plants to produce more foliage than flowers.

Light: Tuberous begonias prefer partial shade, as too much sun can scorch their leaves and flowers. Place them in a location where they will receive morning sun and afternoon shade.

Pruning: Tuberous begonias benefit from regular pruning to encourage bushier growth and more flowers. Pinch off the tips of the stems when they are about 6 inches long, and remove any dead or yellowing leaves.

Dormancy: Tuberous begonias go dormant in the winter. After the first frost, dig up the tubers and store them in a cool, dry place until the following spring. Remove any soil and let the tubers dry out for a few days before storing them.
